Thank You To Our 2021 Interns And Assistants!

Training the next generation of endangered language activists and scholars is important to us. In 2021, we welcomed six different intern cohorts working on the Sora language documentation project as well as on the Living Dictionaries platform, several volunteer research assistants as well as a team of phonetics researchers in India, a new web developer and a web development intern. Here are a couple of glimpses of our teams at work!

Sora Annotation Team

Summer 2021 intern cohort who worked on annotating Sora texts in ELAN
Our online summer cohort included Isaak Spain, Benjamin Hunt, Ria Isabelle Allida Dela Rosa, Şima Doğan Balci, Ashwini Parmar, Becky Smith, Olga Olina, Abbie Amick and research assistants Ella Hannon and Ashlie Devenney (also listed below). They joined us from India, Turkey, the US, the UK and Germany. The team worked on Sora annotations in ELAN with Dr. Greg Anderson, Dr. Luke Horo, Opino Gomango and Anna Luisa Daigneault.

Web Development Sessions
We welcomed a new web developer in 2021, Diego Córdova Nieto (lower left) who is based in Mexico City! Here he is seen working with Living Dictionaries platform coordinator Anna Luisa Daigneault (top right), web development intern Peng Dong (top left, who volunteered for us as well as Wikitongues) and Wikitongues director Daniel Bogre Udell (lower right). They are working on a video integration feature for the Living Dictionaries platform.

Phonetics research assistants based in Guwahati, India

Phonetics cohorts in 2021 included Vinny Ong and Cassandra Caragine (summer interns) as well as Kelsey Bialo and Tom Edwards (fall interns). A huge shout-out to our new team of phonetics research assistants in Guwahati, India! Sakshi Singh, Ria Borah Sonowal and Aman Kumar Singha are working closely with Dr. Luke Horo, analyzing Sora acoustic data in Praat.

Thank you to Kapil Medhi, Luke Horo and Palash Nath who translated the Living Dictionaries interface into Assamese, Nur Hidayah Binte Sunaryo who translated it into Malay, Denis Tokmashev (Russian), Crisofia Langa da Camara (Portuguese), Dana Melaver and Daniel Bögre Udell (Hebrew), Sumedha Sengupta and Prof. Arun Ghosh (Bengali / Bangla), and Peng Dong who worked on Mandarin translations.
