Upcoming Zoom Webinars for Living Dictionaries

Have you ever dreamt of building a dictionary for an endangered language? Come and join us for one of our upcoming free Zoom webinars about Living Dictionaries! Learn how the web platform works, and how you can contribute to safeguarding linguistic diversity.

Each month, we hold a free online training session for language activists, citizen linguists and scholars. All levels of experience are welcome. Taught by Living Tongues Program Director Anna Luisa Daigneault and Living Tongues Director Dr. Greg Anderson, these informal yet informative sessions teach you the basics of creating online dictionaries with multimedia. The Zoom webinars are an accessible way to join the Living Dictionaries community and meet like-minded people.

A screenshot of the Gta’ Living Dictionary displaying the Gallery View of a search result for the morpheme “-pog” which means “bug” in Gta’. Many Gta’ terms for insects, notably butterflies, include -pog at the end of the word. Searching for this term yields a large array of butterflies and other creatures in this dictionary!

Our Living Dictionaries platform now houses public and private dictionaries for over 300 minority and endangered languages from around the globe, and it is growing rapidly. Over a hundred of these dictionaries were built remotely during the Covid era thanks to these online webinars and community collaboration opportunities. The web platform is a work-in-progress and has a long-term goal of helping to safeguard 3,000+ endangered languages over the next 30 years.

RSVP here and attend any of our upcoming sessions.
